Sound like you are missing some teeth...

You will be able to see what's going on in there by turning the drive shaft by hand after disengaging the clutch pedal.Put the rear up on jack stands and then as you as looking from the rear, the right side shifter fork controls 1st and reverse.Using a wooden dowel push it forward, that is rev.turn the drive shaft and see as the gears move if there are any missing teeth on the 1st and rev sliding gear. Then push it back to neutral then back to first.Again turn the drive shaft and look for missing teeth on the rev idler. It is hard to see in there but you should be able to pinpoint the problem. The repair manual helps a lot to have when doing trans work.Go to the parts look up on the cub cadet site and it shows an exploded view of the gears .

ok, dm 17, i got a good one for you. i did as you said to do. i slid the right side up and back and spun the drive shaft and the back tires looking for missing teeth, none were missing. i slid the left side up and back and looked for missing teeth, none were missing. i don't understand it. if you put it in 2nd or 3rd and try to push it, it catches and won't roll, but if you put it in 1st or rev. it will roll. i don't think it would be in the gear reduction, because if it were then i wouldn't have a 2 or 3, right? what now? i wonder if it's the JD gremlins? thanks, jeff

there are no teeth missing, but looking at the cross section picture i got out of the manual, there looks to be a "gear" missing on the trans mainshaft. you can see where i am pointing the screwdriver tip to. but i do have a gear on the left side (looking at it from the rear). thanks jeff

Default tranny gremlins

i went out tonight messing with the tranny in the 108 AND now i have first gear but not R. i have done NOTHING to it. so i think fairies (or is it elves??) are giving me a helping hand. the only thing i done was slide the "slide" back and then forward and presto, 1st gear!!!! i'm gonna give it a few days then go slide it again and see if my R is gonna work. jeff

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
