108 troubles
Hey Guys,
I can't remember if I had posted on here about my 108 rear end going out or not, so I will try to explain what happened. I was cutting grass in the yard in 1st gear and all of a sudden it felt like I had hit a stump. So I backed up and heard a nice grinding sound and then reverse stopped. I pulled it in the shed, thinking that the ring and pinion had broke. I went out today and started her up to run for a while, shut her off and put her in 2nd gear and she caught, so I tried the rest and 1st and reverse are gone, but 2nd and 3rd will still grab like they will both work. I have NEVER been into a rearend of any type vehicle before nor do I know anything about a transmission. :BlahBlah: please tell me what is wrong, does it point towards the trans or the rear end? thanks!!!! jeff |
Sounds like a Transmission problem to me. If the rearend was gone, you would have NOTHING.

I would pull the shifter...the problem will likely be pretty obvious when you take a look inside.

Pull the rear cover off, and if it's like mine you may find a tooth or something else. If not you will likely find something under the shifter.

Its probably the top slider gear for first gear. They can break and fall down into the transmision and get stuck inside other gears. This usualy only happens when putting alot of stress on it from pulling something. It can be the ring giear on the carrier but if it was then it wouldnt move in any gear.

well guys, i took the fender pan off (who would've thunk it that the bolts would be THAT hard to remove on a nearly 40 year old tractor) and the gear shifter and i didn't see anything broke, am i missing something here? and when i get this thing fixed, i think i'm gonna leave the fender pan off and fab up some floor boards and something for the seat to "sit" on because it looks fabulous with out them. jeff

I know you are missing a question that pertains to the funtionality of the shifting of the tranny????
|
Its true they look better with out the fenders! I agree with you there.:D If you do do it, Id like to see what you come up with because I was kinda thinking the same thing when I took mine off, lol.
What is the tranny doing? |
Ok dm17 what did I forget? And Larry, go read my other post "108 troubles". I would tell you but im writing this with my phone since I cant log in on the computer. Jeff
