Yeah, tell me about it. I swear, it took months to recover from the "fixes" from the previous owner.....
And as for the clutch, after examining everything closely, and realizing that I had customer's lawns to take care of OR ELSE, I decided to give it one more try, even though I don't have the gauge and local Cub dealer acted like I was an alien when I asked if one of their techs had a gauge in their toolset. (They also didn't stock any replacement parts for the clutch assy.) Resurfaced the hub, friction disc, and back plate with light grit sandpaper to get the glazing off, reassembled. This time got it so the clutch just grabbed enough, but could be easily let off with minimal pressure on the spring. She works like a charm now. I'm not going to run it like that forever, but it will get me by until I can get the actual TYPE B springs that should be in there. I guess, if anyone needs to in a pinch the answer is yes, you can use the other type of spring from a TYPE A on a TYPE B pulley. |

Hey glad you got it going well enough to mow. Ingenuity is what makes the world go 'round.

I actually gained an appreciation for the design of the PTO clutch on this model of Cub. Very simple. And now that I've dealt with it in depth, and tackled the set screws and such, I have a good handle on the whole setup. Looks like if adjusted properly and used correctly, a clutch could last quite some time on the 129.

The one on my 128 was 38 years old. The disc was in 3 separate pieces when I pulled it apart a few months ago.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
