Default Mechanical PTO Adjusted by Feel - Now What?

Hey guys,

Decided to take off the mechanical PTO on the 129 today to inspect it, see what it felt like it had some play in the bearing (well....that ended up being obvious...bearing is a bit worn).

Anyway, I re-adjusted the clutch, getting at the screws on the back side to be of equal length, followed instruction as much as possible from the Service Manual, but I don't have the PTO adjustment tool. So I did it "by feel." It seemed to grab and release fine by hand, and I adjusted the PTO rod per spec as well.

Well, it's not right. I can get it to disengage when running at idle, but BARELY! A 16th of an inch forward or backward on the PTO lever and the clutch will grab again. I don't want to burn this thing up, but without a gauge...what do you say I do? I'm figuring that I should release a little tension on those screws. One of them was slightly loose when I first got it off the tractor, so I went ahead and screwed them all down a half turn or so figuring that bringing them in a bit would help. But it's just not right. I think I've got them too tight now. This is my first time ever bein in a Cub PTO clutch, all suggestions are welcome.

Dont burn it up. also I use some blue lock tight on the back nuts when I rebuild them. Also I use some anti size in the 6 set screws and always run a tap threw the holes in the PTO

Get the correct gauge and set it up properly,don't forget to get a new PTO button,and a PTO arm wear button.

Yeah, I made sure to tap the holes for the set screws and antiseize them, I wondered if Loctite would be a good idea for those nuts.

I didn't think I'd have time to tear it back off tonight, but my daughter wanted to hang with me in the garage, so we took the front clip off and took the PTO back off.

Here's what I found:





That piece was rubbing on the inner race of the bearing on the crank. Either I had the hub on too far back (don't think that's possible, think that clip prevents it from doing so), or that piece was pulled in too far by overtightening the clutch. The picture kinda makes it look like it rubbed through, but it didn't. The piece is fine, but I gotta get it back on there right next time! Now I can see why I only had a very short range of motion that would allow the clutch to disengage. That's one way to learn that tighter isn't always better....

That is your PTO clutch spring. More than likely it is now toast from being over tightened. Toss it and buy a new one. You might be able to reverse sides with it, and make it work but doubt it will last long.

Just looked closer at your picture. That is a Type A style PTO clutch spring. You can't reverse those.

....and this is weird - just checked out that link you posted - apparently I have a tybe B style hub/pulley with a type A spring!

P.O. claimed to have rebuilt this one....
