Default Cub Cadet 2284 won't start!
Hello Cub Cadet fans. I have a Cub Cadet 2284 Super Garden Tractor that I'm having trouble starting. Last time I used it to mow it did fine and after sitting in the shed it now will not start. When turning the switch to start the low oil light comes on and I hear a clicking noise on top side of engine but the starter does not engage. Is the clicking noise I'm hearing coming from the solenoid? I don't know where the solenoid is located on this tractor. This tractor is new for me as I am familiar with the 82 series tractors. So before I starting tearing into the problem it would be nice to have an idea where to start looking. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Larry.

Cub Cadet's I have are (1) IH 782 for pulling Trailer, (1) CCC 1711 GT with 44" Mower (1) CCC 2284 SGT with 60" Mower and (1) CCC 1864 SGT with 50" Mower. Farm tractors I have are 1956 Ford 641 and 2005 John Deere 5320 with Loader.

First, I would make sure that the Battery is fully charged. If that don't fix the issue, then on to step 2. Take off and clean the Positive and Negative Battery cables, from both ends, and make sure the ends (and their connections) are: clean & bright. Then re-install the cables and make sure the connections are tight.

The oil light should come on, clicking at the top of the engine is the fuel shut off solenoid doing what it should when it is energized. My guess is that you are not getting power to the starter solenoid.

Thanks Sam Mac. Do you know where the solenoid is located? I would like to do voltage check to see if voltage is ok. If not 12 volts I think R Bedell may have the solution.

I sure do. It's the blue wire in this pic. The 2284's were noted for having starting problems and Cub had a fix for it that consisted of a relay to supply power to the starter solenoid. From what I understand they had an issue sending the power through the ignition switch to the starter because it pulled too many amps. Anyway see what you have at the blue wire red arrow points to it in this pic. It's on the right side of the engine as your sitting on the tractor.

I have a 2284 that has a starting problem also if I hit the key 10-15 times it will finally start FrankF3 sent me the updated wiring schematic on how to fix this issue I have not had a chance to do it yet. If you pm me your email I can forward it to you.

Just a heads up, I have the same issue with my 2284 and occasionally my 1864 (obviously both Commands). I have been doing some research and will be doing a how-to thread soon here on how to install the relay for those that have this issue.

Ryan, I have been meaning to do the same right-up but I will let you do it as I can't type near as fast as most, but our commands have the same problem and will get the relay to fix those nasty click-no-starts fixed!!

Of the few 2000-3000 series tractors I've been around, they all seem to require a heavy foot on the brake pedal to engage the start safety switch.

Drove me nuts trying to start my 3206 the first time.
Depress the brake pedal all the way, then push it a little more.

MTD put the switch all the way to the bottom of the pedal travel, and if your brakes are well adjusted or seldom used, it takes some effort.
