I don't think the gauge type cap was original to the 127, but was probably added by a previous owner.

My trials and tribulations have been related to low fuel when parked on an angle.. my tank has sort of a false side in it... on the fuel line side of the tank you'll notice a small protrusion on the bottom.. this, I gather, is where the fuel flows into the side where you can't see.. If you look at the tank you'll note it's shorter on the inside than the outside.. I'd make sure you have plenty of fuel and that fuel is making into the false wall side.. perhaps you've got gunk that got into that other side? and also.. I've torn the whole fuel system apart only to find that the fuel valve on the sediment bowl was closed...

I had my 123 die on me once - like it ran out of gas. Check the gas tank, it was almost full. Then I noticed that the shut off valve on the sediment bowl vibrated shut - I didn't tightened it all the way counter-clock wise when I opened it.

Same thing happened with my 127.....which has a metal cap with a cork gasket, or should I say HAD a cork gasket. It fell in the tank and crumbled into fine pieces, eventually making it through the screen in the sediment bowl and into the carb.
Cleaned all that junk out, and no more problems.... Sounds like your issue is something similar Jeff (teet)

I'll try dissecting the gas tank and carb in a few days. I guess I'm heading to the Smokey Mountains. Nice to know the night before!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
