Default PTO won't stop spinning; what to do?

So as many of you may know, I recently replaced the PTO end crank seal on my 1864. Well, when I put it back together, the PTO now won't disengage. If I flip the switch (and can watch and see this) the PTO will click and engage and click and disengage when I flip the switch on and off. The problem is it isn't stopping when the PTO is disengaged, I can't start the tractor without the deck starting with it :-/

Below are a few pics of things. It doesn't seem there is a way to "gap" this PTO, there is just one center bolt holding it on. Any ideas what it could be? It almost looks like in the last pic, the brake pucks circled in red seem to be worn, could they not be stopping the PTO? But if that was the case, shouldn't the load from the deck when the friction plates are separated be enough to stop the PTO? I'm just frustrated; the PTO worked before I removed it and now, nothing.

I hate to have to buy a whole new PTO if it's something simple and since I can physically see the clutch being engaged and disengaged, it's got to be something simple...I hope.



(That's grease on the shaft, for those that would be curious)

That happened to me on a 2284 and it was a seized bearing. took it apart and lubed up the bearing and its been fine since, replacing the bearing would have been an even better idea but it's worked so far.

Thanks guys, I will check that out. First time it did it, I started the tractor with the deck engaged, I'm sure that was good on the engine

Solution Update

Well gentleman, I found my solution. Thanks to timbo2 for the link to his thread on his PTO bearing. I was able to get mine opened up, freed up, lubed up, and now (at least for now) it's ready to go again.

Below are a few pics for those that may come across this thread in search of the same help I needed. It's pretty simple; I started by removing the bearing cover with a small flat head screwdriver. Popped it off and squirted some WD40 in there to get things started. I would take a small punch and lightly tap it in opposing directions to break it free. Once it started to move, I would put grease around the bearings and spin it some more. Once the new grease worked in, the old (dirty) grease would work out. I would clean it out as best I could with a paper towel and small flat head acting as a scoop. As it began to spin easier and easier, I grabbed a pair of 50 cent pliers I bought at a garage sale that happened to fit the bill perfectly and used those to spin things around. Once I was satisfied there was more new, clean grease than old in there, I punched the top back on and reinstalled; worked like a charm! I'm sure I'll need a new bearing one day so I want to order a couple to have on hand, but this worked just fine for now. Hope you guys enjoyed

BTW: Does anyone have a part number for the bearing I'd need to buy to use a replacement?

Ryan, the bearing number is on the seal you popped off. Do you want me to read it off to you?

It's NSK 6206DU. It's an incredibly common bearing. If you had ran to your local NAPA or O'Reilly's they probably would have had them in stock.

If you look in the tech section, I have a write up on PTO bearing replacement.

Had I known the bearing was that common, I would have grabbed one. Oh well, I'll know for next time!
