Weirdest thing on my 2284 super. The PTO won't turn off. I had to remove the belt so it doesn't spin mower deck while trying to start. the plate/disk moves in and out when I toggle pto switch but pulley keeps going either way. I disconnected the wire harness leading to PTO and still it runs. I've only had it a few weeks so I don't know it's history.
Any idea's? this is my PTO: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=c...&dn=0041300013

Simple answer is the bearing in the pto is froze. You need to either replace the pto or tear it apart and replace the bearing.

Thanks AJ,
Since a new PTO is about $300 I'd like to try to fix it. I've looked in the resource section but don't know how applicable they are to that PTO. Is that bearing hard to get too? I have pulled the various PTO parts off the drive shaft-

http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30 Then I am out of luck because there is nothingn like that on this PTO, there is nothing to adjust and since its probably mid-90's or later I'm guessing it's throw-away, which is likely what I'll do with it after trying a few more times. take care-

Well AJ I have to take back what I said. I spent some more time with it and found the bearing. at first it wasn't budging but after some wd40 and taps with the hammer and punch it slowly started moving. did that over and over and it is spinning smoothly now.
Should I pack some grease in there before I re-install in a couple days? Thanks again! here are some pics!

If you can find the numbers on it, I would try to replace it. I bet it will probably lock up on you again in the future. You can check here for bearings. http://vxb.com/

Pack it with grease put the seal back in and use it .
Then order a new one as they are only $6-8.00 They are a 6206 double seal. when it fails again, then you have one to fix it with. I have done that many times to get through planting or harvest then fix the equipment properly in the off season. |

I think there were some numbers on the dust cover, I'll check it out. Thanks for that website and all your help.
Get this pto fixed and I can move on to whatever is next on this 2284, everytime I fix one thing, I find something else! makes me appreciate the 1872 which is hardly any trouble in comparison. This site has been great though, I've had no experience with tractors until about a year ago. take care,

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
