What is the best way to polish the combustion chamber of a cast aluminum K301 cylinder head? Is it worth the effort? Is there any HP increases?

It can't hurt!! You can try using oven cleaner to loosen the deposits -- if that doesn't get all of it, then I have used some automotive 1000+ grit sandpaper to lightly sand them away and then use lacquer thinner to thoroughly clean it before re-assembly.

Well, things have been slow lately on this project due to cold weather and the fact my painter has been draging his feet on shooting the red paint. I knew better than to do it, but I "pre-paid" for the work

Thanks again Wild Bill! Would a 18hp cam(longer duration, stock lift) work fine in a 12hp k301 governed at 4,000 rpm for yard work

Kirk's cheater cam is a better choice than the 18 horse power cam. I've ran both....Kirk's cheater cam makes better power and is cheaper too.
I did the Killer Kohler mods to my K241 in my 100. Tractor doesn't run out of power. I didn't respond to your orginal question in this topic: What is the best way to polish the combustion chamber of a cast aluminum K301 cylinder head?. There isn't much you can do except try another head. The best head I found is the one that has the spark plug over the exhaust valve. Running a good grade of fresh fuel will make your Kohler run good. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
