Default 108 pto brake issues..again

I fired up the 108 to get ready to push some snow,saw smoke and saw it was coming from pto clutch/brake area. I replaced the button with a brass unit a while back (the tractor was dormant for a while,and had not been run since replacement button was installed). It was hot enough to turn the brass black and i noticed brass shavings everywhere. Its like the pointed area of the pto clutch is drilling into the brass brake and burning it up.I currently have the snow plow on the tractor, should i disengage the pto lever as soon as i start the tractor?or could somthing else be going on? All this started when the old fiber button gave out and got replaced with the brass one. Any ideas?. We have 6+" of snow coming and i was looking forward to it! Thanks

The PTO button is not a brake. They made a clutch with a ~2.5" brake disc towards the end of that series. Do you have that one or the earlier version of the clutch with just the small button?

The PTO should be engaged whenever there is no implement attached to it so no wear is occurring. The thrust button at the center of the PTO clutch should be rounded, not 'pointy'. If it's 'pointy', that may be part or most of the problem. It also needs to be smooth.

I'm still not convinced that replacing the fiber wear buttons with a brass or bronze button is a good idea. I have a feeling that most of the people that make those don't know what they're doing and make it out of an unsuitable alloy. There are many bronze alloys used in plain bearings that would be a good choice. Brass isn't meant to be used for bearings and wouldn't be a good choice for this application, either.

I appreciate the reply Matt G. I think mine is a earlier version. The build date (according to the chassis plate) is July/Aug of '72. I should have been a little more thourough researching before i bought the part. At this point i think i'll buy the correct part through a trusted vendor,start there and work my way thru until its working the way it should.

Cubdrummer,
I was having a problem with my 149 eating wear buttons last year. It seems the PO ran the tractor without a wear button on it and kept tightening down the adjustment to get the PTO to work. The center of the PTO rockshaft ground the thrust button to a point like you describe. then, whenever the PTO was disengaged, the thrust button would chew away at the wear button. The PTO had to be rebuilt so it worked properly and I have had no problems since that.

Thanks Jason, I think im going to pull the pto off, rebuild or replace it and start from square one. What you described with your 149 sounds real similar to the problem im having. Thanks for the reply.
