2 dipsticks?
i wonder why my 147 had 2 dipsticks. while putting her back together, im going to just put a cover over the cam and only use the upper dipstick( i have one that is the proper lenght). i was told that the lower dipstick has a tendency to leak so im not going to use it. why did they do this from the factory anyways? does the machine really need 2 dipsticks.

The 147's didn't have 2 dipsticks, they had a upper fill tube and a lower dipstick due to the addition of the balance gears resulting in interference when using the upper fill tube as a dipstick. This is what I learn off of this wonderful site when I did my research.

The upper dipstick is correct. The one is on later engines like in the wide fame series all the narrow frame had the upper one. All of the older IH cubs didn't have a fill tube (82 series did) They use the same tube.

the original engine had a "fill tube" and a dipstick located on the timing gear cover. im installing a standard cover without a dipstick and using a regular full lenght dipstick. im also not using balance gears, they have a tendency to destroy engines, they are going in the garbage.
