Default Any Ideas?? PTO set screw stripped!

Ok, getting my 71 ready for winter and when I bought it PO said he lost the pto, then called me 2 weeks later to tell me he found it. I was stoked, so I went to install it and one of the set screws is froze up and stripped out, should I just drill it out?, kinda of afraid to mess up the threads!

I got a stripped one out with a Torx bit. It was a long one with a hex end on it like you would use in a cordless drill, just beat it down in with a hammer and it came right out. If the PTO is already off mabey you should heat it after you get the bit drove down in.

No one ever forgets how important it is to have the dwell holes perfectly clean. It dont do no good to back a screw out of a hole smaller than the screw's self. That goes for both screws.

Yup, #10 or #15 torx bit, might also try an impact driver.

Default 1/8" cobalt drill bit

You will have to go realy slow and dont be stingy on the cutting fulid. You can follow up with a cobalt 3/16" drill bit to finish off the tip of the inner screw. Be careful you dont snap the bit at this point. I dont know however, if re-threading the pto is required after. I have not had to drill mine. Good luck!

Default Thanks guys!

Ya, will try a torx bit tomorrow! I always clean out/off the rust or crud from threads before I try to remove something, don't know why this set screw is stuck in there. May apply some heat to it, but will need to take it apart as to not burn the disc, which now that you guys got me thinking about it, I should rebuild completely as the PO rebuilt it(why it was lost) and I not sure of his ability after this set screw!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
