In dire need of a 54T Bevel Gear to complete my transmission rebuild ofr my 5254L. The original part number was 717-04061, and is no longer made.

New or used.

Mine has about 30% teeth worn. I don't think I can afford a new one made from a CNC. I have tried Messicks, CC, Andersons, EBay. Can't seem to find any except people that need one too.

For that amount of money, if I'm you, I would contact that outfit before ordering to see what they're attitude is on helping before spending.

Google m&d mower and appliance reviews. Lottsa upset people.

If you already found the correct part, that's probably the best way to go, even if it costs nearly $200.

If that doesn't pan out, another option is to find a friendly machinist who knows how to measure pitch and pressure angle to properly identify the basic gear. Blank gears may be available off the shelf from manufactures like Browning or Martin. A machine shop should be able to bore and key a blank gear as needed, and if necessary, make a stub shaft for it. That shouldn't cost more than the tractor is worth.

30 years ago, I used to do that kind of work. I even made gears out of round bar, using hand ground tools to replicate tooth profiles that no longer existed for repairs to antiques. That kind of job likely would be more expensive than the tractor is worth. The tooling & fixtures took me half a week to make. The research was also no 5-minute job. ...but when somebody wants 1920's vintage equipment to run, sometimes people will pay more than you would expect.

Or perhaps these days there may be a CNC or 3-D printing option available. Personally I have never trusted the 3D stuff for high stress applications, but people tell me that it has come a long way from the days when we called it solid modeling. That was back in the 1990's.
