I am working on my 782 with a KT17. I am replacing the breather tube and have a question. Where does the red seal go? It was loose under the cover when I removed it. Also, do I need to add a sealer to the cover gasket? I attached an image.
Thank you. |

I dont have a KT17 so I'm not sure of the red seal.....but by looking at the engine diagrams Cub Cadet Parts &Service link above, that red seal is maybe for either the air filter housing assembly or the breather assembly...... it appears it slides over the threaded rod that is used to hold/attach the assemblies together. It must be properly placed between two parts also on this rod. I would hazard a guess.... someone had taken the air filter assembly apart and dropped the red seal down the breather tube.

Billy O is correct the red seal goes over the rod. You should have
a gasket for the cover itself otherwise it will leak. I always put a thin layer of sealer on the gasket and I mean so thin you can't hardly see. But I am a bit of an overkill guy. I imagine a person could make a gasket and be just fine but you will want one. Ken |

The neoprene red bushing does indeed go over the stud in the breather between the covers as mentioned, it keeps the oil vapor from seeping around the stud and out of the top cover making a very slow, but steady unsighty wet area overtime.

O.k,I some how thought when I bought my 125 and that part was missing, the cover was wrong side up,leaking and warped that it was a spacer to keep the cover from being over tightened. Thanks I then proceeded to buy and study all the manuals I could find and join these two cub forums to learn many things from all the knowledgeable guys. There were a few other things I found, but we're good now

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
