There seems to be a discrepancy from the manual to the instructions that came with the piston rings. The manual says top ring is rounded on the outside edges and the second ring has a 45 degree champher facing up. The instructions that came with the rings say the 45 champfer is on the second ring and the square cut ring is on the top.
Anyone know the correct setup? My rings also do not have a ring with rounded outer corners like the book pictures. Thank you. Dirk |

Various manufactures have different designs.
Usually rings are "barrel" shaped on the edge that contacts the cylinder. The 45* chamfer is usually referred to when speaking of the inside of the ring that lives in the piston groove, and that usually faces to the top of the piston. It is felt the 45* bevel promotes better sealing when the explosion occurs in the cylinder, forcing the ring tighter to the cylinder wall. Usually the 45* chamfer is 2nd ring and a non marked ring or "barrel" outside edge is the top ring. Some top rings are chrome edge or have a moly overlay. Second rings are most always grey cast iron. As mentioned, ring manufactures instructions always take preference. |

The manufacturer of the rings has several profile pictures of different style rings next to the groove where they want them. The first and second grooves have both the square cut ring and the 45 degree cut ring next to both grooves along with others. ![]() I will put the square ring in the top and the 45 bevel ring in the second according to what George said. |
