I'm looking at getting one of these, but one of my main uses is to cut 1/3-1/2 acre of field grass a couple times a year. It isn't extremely thick luscious tall grass, but a little dryer and medium to thin density.
Will this setup work well for the task? I don't really want to go .5mph and make partial passes just to cut the field. I do it just to knock it down a couple times a year for fire and to keep it clean. I can only go so fast anyways without beating myself up on the uneven field ground. |

I'd say its capable of doing that but it is not a brush hog so several trips across the field will be necessary as taller grass will just bend over as the deck pushes it down going over it.
You need a DR trimmer type of machine or a sickle bar, not a lawnmower deck A brush hog type of mower would be ideal. As far as fire suppression, any dry vegetation will burn, the only answer to that is bare ground.

Our entire area burned a couple years ago and let me tell you, there is an absolutely huge difference in the areas that were maintained this way and those that were just allowed to grow wild. |

Glad you knew the answer before I tried to help.
Just keep doing what you have been as it works for you. I hope you don't have to experience a burn again, that is an awful way to loose everything.

I have a 1641(2 more hp) that I used a 48 inch deck on. I never had any problem with it bogging. I had some places that I only mow every month or so with the deck up about 5 inches. If the grass gets a foot high the deck will push it over and not cut it well but that's not a power problem.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
