Hello, I just acquired a 1641 the steering box is so sloppy it takes a half of a turn of the steering wheel before it catches. I have not taken it off and apart, can it be adjusted from the bottom while in machine?
Does that adjuster pin that comes in from the side wear commonly? supposed to be hardened is what I read. |

What kind of condition are the tie rods in? Any slop in those? I think there are 4 total.

tie rods have some slop but not enough to cause the steering wheel to move that much before steer action, I can see the pitman arm not moving too.

Yes the pins do wear. Try turning the pin in a quarter turn, that will change the wear points. On the bottom of the box remove the cotter pin and turn the nut in until it starts getting tight then back off to where the cotter pin will go back in. None of this is according to a manual but it did help mine.

I turned the pin in 1/4 turn, still has play in steering but not half a turn. There is play in the tie rod ends but also in the front axle center pivot, can of worms keeps getting bigger.
thanks for the help. |

Underneath the front of the tractor are 2 snubber bolts that probably need to be adjusted. Turn them in so that they are just barely touching the front axle. Pic shows the bolts looking down from the top with the engine removed. Instructions from page 23 of the owners manual

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
