Default New to me 149

Picked up a 149 this week from epay, paid a little more for it than I really wanted to but only had to travel 20 minutes each way to pick it up.

The guy said it had a newer engine with very low hours (turns out to be a ten digit serial number beginning with 19 making it a 1989 model year engine) the engine is very clean, no baked on oil and the paint on it (the engine) is very good.

It runs a little rough until it warms up, after I get the rest of it back together, I'll set the timing and try to adjust the carb. and we'll see what happens.

The steering was really tight and the hydro was the loosest I've ever seen, I greased the steering spindles and it steered a lot easier but the column was really sloppy.

Tonight I pulled the column (the tube cam out of the box) haven't taken it apart yet, so I don't know what it's like inside.

I also pulled the rear end and transmission, surprisingly it was dirty but not oily/greasy, two of the three mounting bolts on the left side were loose and the third (an axle housing bolt) was missing (didn't dig around in the hole yet to see if it's broken off or just gone) also don't know yet if there are any threads in the hole or not. I started to pressure wash the transmission tonight but it began to rain so I quit. As I was washing I noticed one of the bolt holes on the right side axle tube has a pretty good size chip out of it, not sure if I will replace the tube or not.

Tomorrow I will rebuild the column and repair the trunion and see if I can tighten the forward reverse lever or not. I also have to replace the hydro fan as ALL the blades are gone, and I will probably weld up and machine out the drive shaft driver, it's worn pretty bad and I'm already there so I might as well do it now.

Oddly it had a 42" mower deck on it (I have a very nice 48" that I will replace it with). It has the hydraulic lift but no 3 point hitch and doesn't look like it ever did.

When I get it back together I'll post some pictures, I'm thinking this one will be a keeper. If so, I'm going to sell off several of my other Cubs, Probably one Original, two 123's my 104, maybe a 125, a 126 and/or a pretty nice 106. I may end up with a little room to walk around when this is all done!

Hmm, maybe you could throw some of those unwanted Cubs you got my way. A 104, 125, 106 or even a 126 would look nice with my other Cubs.

Oh, and congratulations on the 149. I can't wait for the pictures of when you get it back together.

Congratulations on your 149 purchase!! My hydro lever was loose, too when I got mine and it also has a 42" deck on it. They are real powerhouses, though and I know you'll enjoy the performance from it once you tweek it out how you want it. Can't wait to see your pics!!

Well I didn't get everything I wanted to get done last Saturday, so I finished putting the column back together Sunday and put it in. Then the muel drive, deck hanger and fineally the deck.

So I cut some grass, hard to believe that 2 more HP makes such a difference.

Tomorrow, sharpening the blades, checking the electrical system, because the battery (which ws supposed to be new) was almost dead this evening, then going to load the tires. Also want to check out the hydraulic lift, it doesn't seem to go up all the way.

I set the timing and adjusted the carb. last weekend but it still seems to run a little ruff until it's warm. I may pick up a head gasket and carb. kit for it this week. Then clean the carbon out and rebuild the carb.

Over all, it seems like a pretty decent machine, although it isn't very pretty

Hi fellas. New here but not to cubs or other forums. Nice one you have going here.

Must be the week for 149's as I picked up one yesterday.
It needs a lot of work cosmetically but is solid, runs strong and the hydraulics work as they should. It's sitting crooked because the left rear is flat on one side.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
