Hey everyone, last week I bought a 1440, with the description from the previous owner that it needs "piston rings". Well, after draining 2 extra quarts of oil out of it, and pressure washing it down really well, it runs and looks pretty good.
Although getting rid of all the dirt and crud buildup has revealed a substantial oil leak towards the rear. Without looking into it I'm guessing rear main? Does anyone have any advice for these engines...are there known issues that everyone should look for?

I'm pretty sure your engine wasn't designed to run upside down...perhaps that is the cause of the oil leak! Try riding the tractor "right side up" and see if the oil leak issue disappears...

I'm not sure how to fix the photo issue...the past 4 pictures I've uploaded have orientated themselves wrong. They aren't that way on my phone. Sorry but I'm not sure how to even check it before I post.

Pull the engine, remove the tins, remove the flywheel, remove the seal. Install new seal, reinstall the flywheel, tins engine and be happy.

Ok gotcha, well I guess I'll pull the engine and look into it. Just wasn't sure if there was a "known" oil leak issue to investigate first, thank you.

Ok great thanks Mike, I was just going to ask that question.
While I have this apart, are there any other gaskets/seals I should be replacing that are known issues? I'd like to have the parts on hand first so I can tear it down and repair it immediately so it's all fresh in my head. Here's another picture of the oil leak, this is after probably 20 minutes of run time.

If you find the cooling fins on the cylinders caked with oil/grass from the crankshaft seal leak, it'd be a good idea and spring for head gaskets as well. Flatten the head with sandpaper and a piece of glass first. New valve cover gaskets and nut sealing washers and you're good to go.Vanguard 1.jpg
