Default Questions About 1650. I just got offered to buy.

A friend called me yesterday offering me his 1650. He got it from a friend last year. He wants 500.00 for it. This model of wide frame is new to me. He says runs fine. Deck is very good. Some loose sheet metal around engine he said. Plus gas drips from tank. I'm just wondering what to look for to stop any problems. Thanks.

Grab hold of the engine and try to shake it/rock it around in the frame.
If it is loose you will know it. Probably has an aluminum pan in which case if the engine is loose, there may be loose or missing mounting bolts and worn pads on the pan where it sits in the cradle.

OR

The ISO mounts may be bad or be on their way to non-existent.'Start it and run it through different speeds while sitting on it and see if your fillings don't fall out.
The 16's have a bad wrap for vibrating

Make sure the muffler box mount is not cracked, loose or missing panels or screws.

Check the driveshaft flex joints on each end if possible for deterioration and cracks or distortion from round.

If your buddy has owned this machine for a year he should already know this.
Ask what, if anything, he has done to it in terms of repairs of service.

Good luck!

The leaking tank could be the rubber bushing at the fuel pickup or sometimes the metal straps cut through the plastic tank. The bushing is an easy and cheap fix, if the tank is cut from the straps you can repair it but if it's real bad you may be looking for a replacement. I put strips of rubber between my straps and tank to prevent this.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
