Default CC 149 hydro transmission seals

My neighbor has a Cub 149. He said the transmission is leaking at the seals around the shaft which controls the forward and reverse movement. He wants to remove the transmission to replace the seals. A couple questions: Where can we find new seals? Are there any mine fields we should be aware of before we dive into this?

I have always gotten good advice and direction from the members of this forum and look forward to your responses. Thank you

You can replace 3 of the 4 seals from the outside, but not the one under the speed control lever (trunion) without going inside which I don't recommend if you are not handy with tools/hydraulic's

Thanks for responding to both my posts, very helpful. My neighbor is a retired mechanical engineer and is a pretty sharp guy. He's willing to take a wack at this as a winter project. Do you know what seals we would need and where to get them? Thanks

Use the Cub Cadet Parts and Service Lookup link at the top of page to lookup up the part numbers for seals after entering the model number of tractor.

I would strongly suggest you/he review the posts/video's here/ and online before you wind up with a pile of hydro parts and pistons in a pile on the bench.

I might add, download the service manual, study and follow it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
