Default 1650 trunnion plate woes

Hi everyone, I've got a bit of a problem. The trunnion plate on my '78 1650 wore completly through and popped the springs out. Do I understand correctly, the plate is part of the shaft($ 240!!!) ? Anyway to repair this? I think the plate needs to be replaced, as both ends ( where the button guides would be) notched through and took the outside edge. I' m not sure a piece could be added to the edge and get everything right. Thanks for any advice.

Depending on how bad it is, you may be able to weld the plate back together and build it back up. There are a few posts about how to do that...

another option is to go with one of these:

Either way, put some wet rags around the area while you weld so you don't overheat the hydro and cause further damage. Put some new pins and springs in there while you are at it.

Thanks super1914, that looks like it would work and it's only $11.50! I'm no welder, but I'll talk to a friend that is. I think rather than fabricating a new end on mine, the repair from xtreme will probably get the nod. Still will have to get new springs- the old ones are somewhere out in the grass

I just replaced my springs....around 20 bucks from cub for both springs and pins and its surprising how well it operates now. I am sure that you will be amazed at the difference if your trunion was so worn that the springs fell out! Just to make life easier on yourself, I would recommend taking the rear end out of the tractor. It will give you much easier access to the trunion and its a good chance to clean out the fluid and any other nasty junk inside and give the outside a good cleaning to make it run nice and cool. Download the service manual to see how its done. Should only be a few bolts to remove, a new rear end gasket and some new HyTran. It will only take you a couple of hours if you can talk your welder friend into helping you and is well worth it.
There are a ton of posts from people who have already done this too so do some looking and feel free to ask questions. Thats what we are all here for!

Thanks for all the help. Sorry it took so long to reply, but I was having problems logging on. A special THANK YOU to Roland for helping with that issue. Back to the 1650, I've got it welded up and waiting for the replacement springs. This place is great

Glad you got things welded up. Did you use the insert from Xtreme or just fill weld it?
