Trying to get a 126 going. When I go to put the negative terminal on, the engine turns over when the key is off. I have tried two different switches, two different solenoids, two different voltage regulators. I am certain everything is wired correctly, I’ve quadruple checked it. Only thing I can figure at this point is the starter generator. Any suggestions?

Shorted Wires. Remove the "Blue" wire from the S/G and see if it cures the problem.

Eliminating the blue wire did the trick, just see the points to the v/r close.

The Blue is getting shorted and picking up a "hot wire" somewhere OR, the V/R is bad.

Or you are using an aftermarket regulator and not wiring it correctly.
Make sure you are following the LABELED terminals on the regulator and not where they are located |

Those aftermarket ones put the gen tab on the bottom, hard to see it as they bend the terminal over the stamped GEN on the base.

I agree with the above. I wired my V/R incorrectly and it started cranking out of nowhere.
So, check the regulator. Good luck!

Thanks Roland for the troubleshooting and everyone for the help. Well it was the regulator wired incorrectly......... After cleaning the points it fired up fast. Hard to say how long it sat dormant, guy I bought it from estimated decades. I ran it around, needs clutch work but it’s smooth and no smoke(except all the rust out of the muffler)I rebuilt the carb and resurfaced head/new gasket over the previous winter as I could see it was leaking. Now I’ll focus on changing gear oil and prettying it up. Thanks

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
