What would cause new belt to be really hard to install
Either they sold me belt that's to short or something happened on deck/pulleys. After install and testing, I ran it for a bit to check, I find temperature of belt in the 150-175 range, with temps up to 250-275 on pto, the two idler pulleys-175, temps on deck/double pulley are in the 130 range. I've replaced my share of belts since owning this mower, bought it new and getting close to 700 hours, never remember belt going on so hard, has to have something to do with high temps, I just don't see problem |

First.. welcome to OCC
Look up correct belt in manual. It usually also includes belt length in inches. Measure the new belt to eliminate possibility of wrong belt. If it is correct belt theres a very good chance you routed it wrong..

Who are "they"
Walmart, tractor supply, ebay, local lawnmower shop, home cheepo? What are the numbers on the belt? Are your idler tensioners bound up causing the previous belt to break prematurely? At 700 hours you should have done or had done, some routine preventive maint, was it done correctly? Many variables we can only guess without more info. ![]() |

1 from Amazon, 20.00 belt 1 from my local Cub Cadet dealer, you all know what they cost suspecting a problem I purchased a sacrificial belt while I tried to figure out my problem. I do think I figured out what I did, the removable hanger at front of deck was, (I think), out of adjustment, I had nuts almost bottomed out on bracket, backed them off a inch, ran it for a bit with pto engaged and I'm seeing much better temps than before, plus the belt was much easier to install. Regarding 700 hr. service-I'm assuming that info is in the manual? thanks |

they figger @ 700 hours and 15-maybe near 20 years, it is way past it's throwaway life span on them lawnmowers. They are not made like the garden tractors were 40-50 years ago, rode hard, abused, and still going strong. Glad you found yer problem and it was simple!! |

Based on the information you supplied, and that everything is original (not modified) the correct belt is: 954-3068 . This is a Section B belt x 110.6" in length.
Assuming everything in the belt path (pulleys, idlers, etc) is good and functioning correctly.

what is the difference between the 754-3068 and the 954-04041 pto belt? I have a gt 2186 with 420 hrs. When installing the 954-04041 factory mtd belt is is much tighter then all that I have installed over over the years, also the belt jumps off the bottom right side pully when the blade is engaged. All the pully's are good. Everything works great with the old belt installed. The old belt rides much lower down in the pully groove. This is the second new mtd belt that I have tried thinking it was made wrong. Any help would be great

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
