I took the 782 out for a ride today and it started smoking. I opened the hood and found the dipstick was popped out and some oil was coming out. The issue is related to the crankcase breather tube.
Here’s a little history behind it. I took the breather apart to replace it because it was the old umbrella style and I put a reed style in it. In the process the old tube was brittle and broke in pieces. It looks different than the ones on the bowl style air breathers, I have the flat style. This is a series II but with swapped tins and intake from the original series I engine. I looked for the replacement tube but only finding KH-52-326-06 listed which is the same part for magnums, and in pictures it looks like the magnum style. The one that came off looks different, there’s not as much of a bend in it and it’s not as long. I stuck one on that I have here that is from a series II with the dome style air filter and it pinches shut, which caused the dip stick to pop out. So, which part number is it that I need to replace it? Or is there really no difference and I have some mutant part that came off?

For the KT-17 Series II Engine, the original Breather Tube was 52-096-18. It is now replaced by 52-096-55S.

Both of those numbers are coming up as the cover plates, not the tube. I have a series II but it has all the series I parts swapped over, including the flat air filter with two wing nuts holding it down.

YUP, the ----55S is a breather assembly.
There is a difference between the Series I and Series II breather tubes. Different parts I see.

I don't need the assembly, just looking for the tube. I found two styles listed under 52-326-06-S.
This one looks like my M18 and my other KT17 Series II with the dome air filter assembly. s-l640.jpg This one is different but listed as the same part number. It does not look like the one I took off. s-l1600.jpg I took a chance and ordered the second one to try, it does not look like mine, but we'll see if it works. Maybe they changed the design of it at some point.

Thanks George, that explains it. There is a rigid section in the middle of the one I took off, with a hose clamp, so it seems like a similar "fix". I'll see if the one I ordered will work, and if not, I'm cuttin' and splicin'.

The second one is what is on mine, no hose job necessary.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
