I have to rebuild my Kohler, so my question is-- I have a chance to buy an 18 hp Briggs & Stratton (opposing twin cylinder)engine. Dont know the model as the side shields are gone, but was told it is from the 1980's sometime. Will it fit in my 782 without any problems? By the looks of the muffler it my be my first big problem. Any ideas on the hook up of the drive shaft to the flywheel or any other possible issues I might have if it would even work? The Briggs does come with a electric clutch also.

I'd pass that up and wait for a decent KT-17 Series II, M18, or CH18 instead. The first two I mentioned will be much easier to hook up. If you try to use the briggs, the muffler is gonna be screwy, the PTO clutch may be a different diameter, which will cause issues, and there could be other problems.

I done it once with the apposing twin, If I were to do it again it would be a V twin Vanguard. for resale value I'd stay with the Kt 17. there are options not that hard to change over, I did have to buy a clutch for the briggs because of the bore being different. $285.00 will get you pretty close to a rebuilt engine doing it your self and you'll know what you have.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
