Default Headlights on a '62

Anybody know any info on headlights for a 1962 Cub Cadet lawnmower? Were they an option back then? I seen them before online and don't know much about them. Are they the same lights as on the Cub?

Hey Bob! Cub Cadet did not make a lawnmower in '62 that I am aware of. The garden tractor was known as an "Original" and more commonly called an "O". On that tractor, the headlights were an option and many of them (compared to their production numbers) did not have that option, but not to the point where they are rare. The cubs that had them would have had two holes drilled in each side of the grille casting, if they were mounted correctly. They were made by the Guide Light Company, which I think may have been out of Ohio (trying to go from memory here...). The headlights on the Cub Cadet Original were the same one as used on the Cubs and also used on the IH Combines in that era, so there are quite a bit of them out there.

Ok, pretty interesting, thanks. I thought it was a lawnmower since mine has a mower deck.

In the vernacular of vintage equipment:

Lawn mower: The thing you walk behind

Lawn tractor: Light duty tractors typically used for mowing the yard

Garden tractor: Beefier tractors used for mowing with a mower deck, Pushing snow with a blade, throwing snow with a snow blower, turning soil with a plow etc etc etc.

A 62 "O" ("Original") is a Garden tractor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
