Just wondering how much belt wear is 'normal'?
The A&I belt I had on lasted 5 years so I think things are in good condition but after the first mowing with a new Oregon belt, I see a slight amount of wear on one edge of the bottom of the V on the belt. I didn't expect to see any wear but considering all the twists and turns the belt makes it amazing they last at all! With the tension off of the belt, the mule has sideways play. Is this normal or needs to be tightened up at the mounting points? Belt alignment looks good, pulleys, idlers and spindles are all decent. Any suggestions on things to check to be proactive and keep from having issues in the future? I'm considering replacing the mule pulleys just because I think they could spin more freely. Also want to replace the bearing on the deck double pulley since they seem a little noisy. Will probably drop the deck hanger and mule this winter and go over everything. Thanks, I can get some pictures tomorrow. |

The last drive belt for my 54" deck was sourced from VBeltSupply, a kevlar belt. Cub Cadet belts last me 3-5 years. Maybe the kevlar belt will last longer. I always keep a spare belt.
The mule drive does move a little side to side. Idler pulleys are slightly stiff, but not loose. May be normal. I grease the deck about every 4-5 mowings. Grease is cheaper than bearings. After the leaf season, I clean and grease after the blades are removed. I think the grease goes in the spindles easier without the blade nut tight.

I was considering a Kevlar belt but went with the Oregon since the A&I belt lasted 5 years. We'll see how long this belt lasts. I keep a spare handy too.
![]() Might tighten up the mule a bit, seems odd to have that much side to side movement. Probably not a big deal. I agree grease is cheaper than bearings so I try to keep my deck maintained too. Last time I greased the spindles I had belt off and turned the spindle as I greased it. I could tell when the spindles were packed. Will probably continue to do it this way. Will loosen the nuts next time too. I keep the blades sharp, much nicer results and seems to cut easier when the grass is long. Will reinstall the belt and watch the wear. I notice one spot on the belt didn't have the wear like the rest of the belt so maybe it's in the manufacture of the belt? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
