Ok, so how bad did I mess up? My 149 has a starter/generator with two flaps, one at each end. I noticed after running it that my s/g would get really hot. None of my other cubs s/g's have these flaps so they were new to me. So I asked a guy who had an older cub what the flaps were for and he said that I needed to put oil in them, so I poured some oil in them. My cub started for about 3 seconds and then would not turn over at all. The lights work on it, but it won't even crank over once. So, how bad did I mess up and how can I fix it---if that is even possible!!! Thanks in advance for your time and expertise in letting me know how naive I am and after calming yourself down from laughing so much

![]() It took me a while to figure out what you are talking about. These "flaps" are oiler spouts. On the older S/G, these were used to oil the bearings on each end of the S/G. Later S/G had Ball Bearings, thus no need for the oiler spouts. It is recommended that these oiler spouts gets routine lubrication. Quote:

Thanks Roland!! I think that I put too much oil in it, so a clean up is probably due and since I don't know the history of this tractor, then no harm done and that is probably a good thing. I appreciate the advice. Now I know that I didn't thrash it, I won't have to invest in another one right now. Thanks again......Have a great day!!!

Okay, when I took the starter/generator apart, the two magnets fell out the back---they are still connected with the wires, but I do not know about the placement of them. When I put it back together, it clicked continuously....Since it worked fine before I added the oil, I think that my placement of these magnets (black trapezoidal blocks) located in the back of the unit (driver's side of it) may be incorrect. Does anyone have a picture of the back side of the starter/generator opened up so that I can check the placement of these magnets?

Are you sure they are magnets and not carbon brushes?

Those two magnets as you call them are the brushes for the starter.If I remember right I think there is a schematic of the S/G in the tech library on this forum.Also if I might make a suggestion you may want to get you a manual for your cub and it should tell you that two or three drops of oil every now and then is all you need to add for those bearings.

I checked them again. They are the brushes--I've never had one of these apart before, so this is all new to me. I'm not for sure in their placement back into the s/g. Also, are there any tolerances that I need to set them at? Thanks for any and all replies.

i have not had mine apart but on any ones i have had apart before the brushes are spring loaded against the end of the armature,at the end of the shaft, while you have it apart clean up the carbon buildup whre the brushes ride. hope this help a little
