Default 1862 PTO conundrum

Im sure this has been talked bout numerous times but I have an 1862 and purchased a 451 snowblower. Its an early serial numbered tractor and i need an answer on changing the PTO out for the bigger pulley. Im hearing dont worry about it. Im hearing you have to change it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The older PTO is smaller so the blower is going to spin slower, it may or may not work ok depending on the type of snow. I would think it would be cheaper and easier to change the pulley on the blower to a smaller one to compensate for the smaller PTO.

Spent some time on this one today. Big difference is in the gear box. 451 has a 2.58-1 ratio and the 450 has a 1.86-1 ratio. You could try going to a 5" pulley on the gear box, not sure what that will do to the pulley alignment. Or you can replace the PTO with a 6" PTO Xtreme has one for $229. I've used Xtreme PTO's and I like them. Here is the link.

I'm having a similar issue, except I have a 450 blower that I bought for my 1811. After mounting it and it not working as it should, I contacted the PO. Turns out it came off a 1782 with a 6" pulley. I started writing a long response, but I'm just going to post a new thread in the implements/attachments section as to not get too off topic with alerim01's PTO issue.

I was on hiatus when you posted this. I addressed this in the other thread that Fetzfarm posted, but I'll address it here too.

I don't recommend going to a smaller pulley on the blower. Reason is, it takes all the power you can get through that belt to run the two stage blower. Going to a smaller pulley decreases surface area for the belt to run on. There is a reason that CCC designed the 450 and 451 with the same size of pulley and changed ratio in the box. That being that a smaller pulley will slip. I've ran a 450 blower for years and I'm telling you, it's a load for that belt. I've not ever slipped it, but I have inverted it. I've ran QA42A blowers too, and slipped the belt on that tiny pulley. You need the big pulley on that blower. It's a big load.

Just to overstate what a load it is, I can mow with a 50" deck in grass so heavy you can't cut it all without backing up, or mowing twice, and I can run the mower for about 4 hours on a tank of fuel, give or take. But when blowing heavy snow, I'm checking the tank at about 2.5 hours. First year I had it, tractor died suddenly. Scared me to death. Thought I broke it. Turns out, I ran out of fuel. Never even occurred to me.... I hadn't been running but maybe 3 hours. That ol Mag 18 drinks the fuel when running a blower!

One more story on fuel:
My wife and I cleared snow one year together. I ran the 1811 and blower and she ran a 125 with a blade. A lot of times I ran out of fuel before she did. 1811 has about a 4 gal tank, and the 125 a 1.5 gal (that may not be exact, but it's close). But we all know the K series is pretty easy on fuel and the Mags drink it.
