Default Breaking belt problem
I have a 1250 with a 38" deck. A chart on one of the cub sites says that the mule drive belt between the pto and the deck should be 3/8" x 81" . I had trouble getting an 81" belt so I tried an 80' one ,twice in fact . Both times the mower worked for a short time and then the belt broke. I thought there was enough adjustment to use the shorter belt. Is the problem the belt length or have others successfully used the shorter belt? If it's not the belt length, does anyone know of other reasons for this to happen? The first time it happened I was cutting heavy growth and thought I'd overloaded the belt. But the second time I cut grass for about 10 minutes. Then the deck was disengaged and raised and there was no grass beneath it. But as soon as I engaged the pto again, the belt broke. I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

On the surface, the correct belt for your 1250 with a 38" deck would be IH-473462-R4 which is a 3/8" x 81" belt.

It would be more helpful, if you posted some pictures of this mounting arrangement and the deck. Perhaps there is something wrong we can't see here now.

Sounds like a cheap belt.


But as Roland said, pics of your set up would be helpful.

You had a problem getting an 81" belt? Could the local Cub dealer not get you one, or could you not order the correct one from their site? If you went smaller and started breaking them, I'd say it's too short. It's probably too tight.

Check the deck belt tentioner, with the spring released it should move freely. If it don't it will chew up belts.
