Default Installing Creeper Gear

Hi everyone, new to the site and new to Cubs but can't stop! LOL

I recently purchased a creeper gear to install on my 102 and I thought it would simply bolt in place. Understanding now there might be a few things I need to change out to make it work. ie. shorter clutch drive? Could you guys tell me what I am getting myself into and maybe what is all involved in making this switch? What all needs to be changed to make it compatible? When I got the 102 someone had already switched out the 10hp with a 12hp so I am feeling really confident about hooking a tiller to the 102. Thanks

Welcome to the board. I just installed a creeper in one of my Originals and it was a big job. I had to cut the drive shaft, and split the tractor to install it. I would assume yours would be the same.

I put one in my 102, the hardest part was knocking out the pins in the drive shaft.

I broke my cub in half, glad I did, found the Pinion gear was egged out bad and also replaced it.

The drive shaft was shot on mine so I bought a new one off of e-bay that was already cut for the Creeper Gear, I also bought a new clutch, throw out bearing and spring seeing it was already apart.

I'm not a mechanic, and I didn't find the job very difficult to do, I got stuck on how to remove the old Pinion gear, but I asked on this site how to and was helped out.

Take photos as you disassemble and take your time....it isn't that hard.

Thanks everyone... I knew I had to pull the tractor in half, but never thought further than that.. Learned today about the drive shaft needing to be shorter so I might try to find one with new bearings and clutch on the other end. Sounds like it's a good time to go ahead and prepare for replacing a few things since I'll have it in half. I've saved this project for this winter so I would have time... We really don't get any snow here worth plowing. Ha!

Download the manual for your machine. It tells how to remove and install a creeper. 102 Chassis Manual.

Pretty sure you are talking about the top shaft in the reduction drive. Is this what you mean??

Post a picture of the creeper gear unit. We can let you know if it has the correct lever for the narrow frame. The driveshaft either needs to be shortened ( if it's in good shape ) or replaced.

I make parts and can make those for you if needed.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
