Hey gang.
Here is a shot of the mystery port/fitting/adjustment thingie I mentioned earlier. In the discussions of the ins and outs of bleeding the fuel lines, I don't seem recall this particular item being talked about. Here it is circled in the attached pic. You can see the bleeder to the right, which I have become quite familiar with. ![]() I have tinkered with it, and basically it is a small stud with a slot for making adjustments with a flat head screwdriver. If you remove it all the way, there is a spring attached to the end. Once you have finished the adjustment, the surround nut is tightened down to hold it in place. It behaves vaguely like an idle setting. I adjusted it with the engine running at low speed, looking for the smoothest idle. It seemed to work, because the little Kubota is finally running well. BUT, does anyone know what it is and how to properly adjust it? I don't like guessing when I can learn how to do it properly. Thanks! |

You are correct...that is the idle adjustment according to my Kubota manual. It doesn't say how to adjust it though.

My IH GSS-1509 Kubota Engine Service Manual also shows it to be for Idle Adjusting and doesn't tell how to adjust it either, based on what I've read so far...

I hit a small incline while mowing yesterday, and I really had to pour on the coal to keep it from dying. From some diesel forums, the idle set screw has to be correct in order for the governor to behave correctly. I'd say mine needs some adjustment yet....

When you say you really had to pour the coal on, does that mean you are not mowing with it running wide open?

No, I was not and I know I should have been. Our property is pretty hilly and has challenging terrain. It will be a great testing ground for this mo'chine.

SaturnV: Still can't find a direct instruction on that adjustment, but my 1987 Winter Training School Manual for the Kubota Diesel Specifications says that the idle speed should be set : "1200 RPM - 100+ 0-". I read that as not less than 1200 but up to 1300 RPM. I would adjust that screw to achieve that RPM range and lock it down with the lock nut.

Thank you sir, great info. So I would perform this setting with the throttle just cracked open enough to idle?

SaturnV: Yes. The throttle setting should be at the idle point (About the area of the turtle just before it kills the engine) when you adjust for that 1200-1300 RPM idle setting.
