Morning all,
I'm down to roll pins holding the brake and deck lift levers so im hoping to be down to bare frame rear and front end parts on the 129. But I want to know what's recommended for old coating removal... sand or soda? I know most of the cub is cast or formed steel... but i have some aluminum rims I need soda blasted and didn't know if it would be worth the extra expense and decon on the cub. Thanks guys Matt

I use fine silica sand for everything, it cuts fast and doesn't leave to rough of a texture.

I buy my sand at a local building supply business, around here it's $8.50 for a 100 lb bag . If your using a quality high build primer there no need to sand, if your going to use cheap stuff then you may want to go over it with 220 grit just to smooth it up a bit.

One thing I will tell you is that silica sand is known to cause cancer but so is all the paint your going to be using, wear a dust mask under your blast hood and you'll be fine.

Lol thank you Tim, im a plant/refinery inspector cancer is peobably inevitable for me. However i will take all the necessary precautions as I'm not volunteering for it. I'll have the blasting done at a shop as i dont have a compressor and my wife will atest that I don't do anything cheaply haha. I want to use a good self etching primer and IH paints.
Thanks Tim!

I've heard some bad stuff about using sand.
What is wrong with this stuff? I think I paid $7 a bag at Northern and it worked well. I always wear a respirator and blast outside because I don't have a cabinet yet. I lay down a large tarp and keep reusing it also. DSCN2587.jpg

That's because the internet is full of people with limited to no experience that like to spread old wives tales, I have hundreds of hours of blasting experience and I only use fine silica sand.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
