Default New member and new 127

Hi All

I'm a new member and would like to say hello from Minnesota first off.

I'm also new to IH cub cadets as I just bought a really nice shape 127. It came with original service manual and I bought an original operators manual off feebay also. There were some things that needed fixing which I got fixed. I'm in need of a new driveshaft as the pin hole is basically worn oblong as is the coupler pulley but it still works for now.

I fixed everything I thought to get the mower deck running and I got the mule drive belt put on and went to start it and then she wouldn't hardly turn over. Turns out the pto clutch is stuck and the starter generator can't overcome the added drag from turning the deck pulleys. Looks like I need a pto clutch rebuild kit. I've read a bunch on how to do it and it seems fairly straightforward.

Is there a master rebuild kit that includes the pressure plate and both buttons? The button on the tractor side is worn to a nub and needs replacement. Also, has anyone tried an electric clutch like they sell on eBay? Seems the manual pto clutch system on this thing is a little crude.

Thanks

Doc

Welcome to the fray known as OCC !!

The 127 is my "favorite".

Although maybe "crude" the pto is effective, long lasting and easily rebuilt for cheap.
Get with "Jeff in PA" member here for a brass tractor side pto button.

Almost all of the website sponsors also handle the rebuild kit.

The engine is not drilled and threaded to except an electric clutch. The master kit will have a disc and springs. The PTO button and the wear button on the lever are separate items and available form sponsors above and other outlets. Consider a brass wear button from Jeff in PA. Better than the finer one.

What's up Doc? The 127 is a fabulous cub cadet with plenty of power and just the right size. The hood on the 127 is one of my favorites that IH put on a cub, too. Hope you enjoy it.

Certainly looking forward to seeing pictures of your 127. Also, you might consider checking the tension on your belt for your mule drive.....perhaps it is too tight, causing more unnecessary drag.

Welcome to OCC! I have a 127 too, and use every week. PTO and deck spindles was the first repairs on my tractor. Good luck and post up some pictures of that new machine!

Chances are there is not enough button left on the tractor side to fully disengage the clutch, and the PO had it set too close when engaged.

Thanks all for the welcome and advice. I can't get over how incredibly over built these vintage marvels are or how cheaply made current machines are. It's amazing the contrast.

Boy I wasn't expecting the weight of this machine especially the big cast iron grill in front. Yikes. What I wasn't expecting to see is pinholes in the mower deck! That deck has pretty thick steel but I noticed in a few spots it's rusted through. I am thinking about scraping off the gunk on the underside and welding in some 1/8" plate in spots.

I'll post some pics later as I think they need to be resized to post them. It feels good to own a small piece of Americana in lawn tractor form.

Welcome to the madness.
Looking forward to the pictures of your 127.

It does, but don't mistake these Garden Tractors as lawn tractors, cause there is no comparison between the two.

Welcome.

As mentioned Jeff in PA can get you a brass PTO button. He can also make you a driveshaft, so you'll have one stop convienence.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my PTO for my 149 right now. Lots of resources here, it's fairly straight forward, and the parts, bearing and all are less than 1/2 the cost of an electric PTO.

Good luck with the repairs, and show us some pics

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
