I made a post a few weeks ago about a 2072 I recently bought that would not roll. I stated that when the rear wheels were off the ground the tires turned freely and when you turned one side the other side turned in the opposite direction but they would not turn both at the same time in the same direction. Well I finally got time to take the 3 pt. hitch plate, drawbar and rear cover off exposing the gears and found that the ring & pinon gears are not moveable. The spider gears are fine
. I cannot see anything wedged between the ring & pinon gear. When you crank the engine and move the SR lever in either direction it loads the engine down so the pump is working and the lift cylinder is working but it just like the ring & pinon are welded together. Does anyone have any suggestions? Dave

Sounds like you will be pulling the rear apart. Once you have the rear out of the tractor pull the pump off and see if you can turn the ring gear. If the ring gear turns with the pump off you have a problem inside the pump. If the ring gear is still stuck you have a problem in the rear.

When you had it lifted the wheels turned by hand right?
I don't know the 2000 series, but does it have the transmission release rod? Had a mower that had the release had locked up causing the transmission to not move. Moving the wheels by had though wasn't an issue. Someone else can chime in but the wheels moving in the opposite direction when turned by hand is normal in an open differential. All of my mowers have always did this (and cars too) |

Oh well, I knew it would probably come to that. My problem is that I am almost blind now (been legally blind for years) an am unable to do the work myself any more. Finding someone who is knowledgeable to do this kind of work locally around here is almost impossible and if I gotta take it to a dealer I might as well part it out because when they got through with me I will wish I had parted it out. Thanks to all who responded.

Can you pull the pump off of it and see if the wheels will spin?

Maybe even pull both relief valves out first and see if it moves.....

They're supposed to turn opposite direction when off the ground. With it on the ground, can you roll it? If not, like what was just mentioned, it could be the relief valves.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
