Default 129 is taking more and more oil...do I need an engine overhaul?

Hi,

I'm assuming that, similar to a car, this is case of 'blow-by' with the piston? Before I mow each time I have to add more and more oil - currently about 1/8 quart or so I'm guessing. The engine was overhauled once a long time ago. I do seem to notice bluish smoke coming out of the exhaust as I'm mowing. What is the best advice? I don't mind tackling smaller, manageable jobs, but really don't have the time right now to do anything major. Have it trailored to my local dealer for the work?

Thanks,
Keith

Yeah, it needs overhauled.

It will cost you a small fortune to have a dealer overhaul your engine. If you can't do it yourself, you might be able to get a engine machine shop to do it for you, but again, it will be costly.

I did offer an exchange program, but right now life has me too busy to take on anymore. I have 2 or 3 sitting waiting for me to get to them right now. I might be able to help later in the summer if you don't get it done. Only other choice is to buy a used engine, or see if another member can help you out. kustomlawnandgarden.com does offer rebuilds at a very reasonable rate. Not sure about warranty, but that is you best choice if you want to pay for a rebuild. My prices are almost identical.

Thanks. I'm sure it'd be expensive, but since I still plan on keeping the tractor I suppose I could check with my dealer on an approximate cost. I'm confident I could do it with enough instruction, but, similar to what you said, life is just too busy for me also to invest the time. Will it hurt to just keep adding oil for now?

Only hurt your wallet. (Which no more than it is I would say won't hurt bad.)

Near Reading (Berks County)....about 4 hours or so away from you in Indiana. Why do you ask? Do you pick-up and repair tractors?

I'll do anything for money, well almost anything. but seriously I was just asking because I'm sure I can rebuild your engine far cheaper than a dealer can or I can rebuild an engine I have here.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
