Default Cub Cadet 582 Restore

Guys, I have a Cub Cadet 582 that was passed down from my Grandpa. It has had a lot of hard use over the years, and I want to restore it. Couple questions. I would like to rebuild the engine. I have a Briggs 16 HP Opposed Twin from another Snapper mower that is a I/C Cast Iron Bore (Model 402437) that I am thinking of rebuilding and putting in. Not sure if the original engine was a cast iron sleeved engine (Model number is 401417)? I am assuming the I/C may be a little better of engine?

I plan on putting a new clutch in it, what else needs to be done to make it as new condition? The transmission and rear end look pretty much in-destructible, is there rear axle/wheel bearings that need to be replaced as preventive maintenance or should I leave good enough alone and it is good for another 30 years?

Thanks for all thoughts/opinions.

Whats wrong with the original engine? If it were mine I would rebuild the original if feasible instead of repowering it with something else that also needed rebuilding.

Thank you. The other engine seems slightly newer and there are more parts (like .02 oversized pistons) available. Otherwise I believe the engines are very similar. This is from research at online parts vendors.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
