Default Original in pieces

been looking for an original and found one for sale. Backstory... owner was working on restoring this tractor until he got sick and son now selling for him. He also owned a very reputable engine machine shop and had many cubs that he restored, most sold now. This tractor is mostly in pieces with everything there except for a few items, some parts totally rebuilt, some primed ready for paint, others primed and painted.

Missing parts:

-hood bird
-ignition switch
-front grille emblem

Good parts:

-engine, bored over
-rebuilt carburetor
- new driveshaft and joints
- rebuilt clutch
- rebuilt front pto clutch
- rebuilt steering gear
- both rear tires are new
- rebuilt starter/generator

Only thing that is not straight for metal is the front part of hood, which I think can be worked out. Rest of metal in great shape with no major rust, just a little surface rust here and there. Tower has been sanded down and primed, but mounting holes need to be welded up yet. Only options it has would be the front pto. The son now runs the machine shop, worked with his dad since he was a kid, and he would stand behind the motor being rebuilt. Sidenote: the son just rebuilt the 14hp for my 1450 and I trust his and his dads level of workmanship. This also comes with a CW36 thrower that looks to be in great shape. He is wanting $700 for everything mentioned above. I don't think it is too bad considering what is new and has been rebuilt, what do you guys think?

Since my mom passed away I have been getting my dad to come out more to visit (two hours away). He has remarked how cool my old cubs are so I would give this tractor to him with the exceptions that he work on it at my shop with my 8 year old son until it is finished, they both like tractors! And pretty sure he would hand it down to my son someday. So I could go buy a nice, turn key older cub but this makes sense to me as it would be a good project that they could do together as long as the price is not out of line. By the way I have no experience with the originals so any other things to look for would be appreciated. I know you guys like pics but I do not have any at this time. Thanks for reading!

If you trust this person that the items you listed are new/rebuilt then it's an ok deal. Not a better reason to get a cub than the one you gave in your story
They make aftermarket hoods by the way if you decide to go that way
Good luck

Nice story and keeping it in the family is awesome and a great gift for your dad and son. No worries about the lack of Original experience there are plenty on here that can put em together with their eyes closed, one of the easiest models to work on. Put an ad in the wanted section for the bird and emblem, you'll pay a decent amount for good ones and the right emblem is metal, not plastic so specify that. Sounds like the guy will aid in the assembly too if he's done cubs. Let us know and pics please!

You say the engine has been "bored over" does that mean that it is put back together and ready to run or are you saying that the machine work on the block has been done and it's awaiting reassembly?

This would make quite a difference in the price that I would be willing to pay.

I have no idea about the value, but your last bit of info about your family is reason enough to find a Cadet to restore, best of luck!

Thanks guys! Yes the motor is all assembled ready to go minus paint. I have seen the cub or pieces of and the stuff that has been rebuilt and or painted looks to be done very well. He still has all the old parts that were replaced, even showed me the old motor parts, piston, valves, ect. I have no doubt on his word. I know this would be an awesome project for my dad and son and I am getting excited for this to happen. What do you guys put for a value on the front pto clutch? Thanks, again.

Default cub

Sounds like it would be off to a great start. Tell him about your father and son project and offer him $500. I'll bet you can get it for $600, seeing how you're a repeat customer. Mike

If it hasn't been put back together there's no guarantee everything works. Not sure what you would do with it after it has put back together. I would find a beat up cheap Quietline instead, or a 149, and give it to your dad for rebuild/restore, it will be a tractor your son can use in 20 years.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
