Default Launch Failure

I started rebuilding a 1650 in October of last year. I took it completely apart, sand-blasted everything, acid washed, epoxy primer, cub cadet paints, new hardware, and replaced everything that was worn. Tonight I finished the re-assembly and started it up. I drove it for about a minute, tested forward and reverse, and the drive shaft started to wobble at the rear end. It jumped around and broke the blades off my new plastic fan and poked a hole in a hydraulic tube. I shut it down to check it out and fluid started coming from the pump shaft input. I grabbed the shaft and I can move the input shaft to pump around. You can probably understand that I am really unhappy right now. So what this this sound like to you folks - a pump seal? a total pump rebuild? or just go on eBay and buy a used one?

Thanks for your help.
Mike

Sorry to hear about the damage. It sounds like the bearing gave up. It may be cheaper and quicker to get another hydro unit.

Bummer! Keep us posted. When I get out of work today I'm going to adjust the speed control cams in my 149. I started it up after a full rebuild and it nearly pinned me into the garage wall! I pushed the brake to stop, but that put it further into reverse! I got the ignition shut down before any damage though.

Note to self, jack up the rear end before starting any hydro after having it apart...

I'd pull the hydro, and disassemble. There are two roller bearings, one in the charge pump cover, the other in the hydro cover. Looks easy enough to knock out and replace (though I've never had to do that).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
