Hopefully my son gets to that point, he just turn 5 last week and his listening skills leave a little to be desired. When we work on cubs together it goes like this- stop, don't touch that, didn't I tell you to stop touching that, if you can't listen your going back in the house.

I use to have a relationship like that when my Son was that age. Steven is now 28 years old. He help me change an engine in my truck when he was 6 weeks old (got to love windup swings). He would pitch a fit if he didn't go out to the shop with me to get a screwdriver. I let Steven work on my tractor when he was 5-6 years old. A hour job would take 2 hours......he did learn something and we had a good time learning. Anytime we went over to Grandma and Grandpa Steven had to ask Grandpa how his Cub Cadet (1450) was. Grandpa would take Steven out to see the 1450. They would go for a drive weather was nice. My Dad still has the 1450.

The first lawn mower that we work on was a Simplicity Yoeman. The engine ran rough and there was a driveline problem. It took some time to get it running. It was a nice running lawn tractor when we had it working right.

The first IH Cub Cadet was a 149. The engine was in several boxes when it came home. Steven and Grandpa rebuilt the engine. The 149 had 4-5 hours on it when we took it to a plow day. I told Steven to drive it hard. He was afraid it would blow up. The question I ask him is did you do the job right? After he answer yes he ran the 149 hard the rest of the day. That was 18 years ago.

In junior high my Wife and I discovered Steven has a mild learning disability. The teachers and principal told us about a special school for students like Steven. I told them where they can stick their special school. All but one of the teachers was willing to work with us. The one teacher that was a pain didn't think Hot Rod or Super Chevy was good reading material to be read the last 10 minutes of the class. The question I had is why wasn't you teaching like you should be ??????

By 17 Steven was working at a small engine shop and was a certified Kohler Tech. All the small engine trouble shooting and working on Cub Cadets paid off.

Since graduating from high school Steven has been trying to finish his 4 engineering degree and work full time for a local ambulance manufacturing company. I miss the days that Steven and I would work on something in the shop. Hopefully in the future there will be a grand son or grand daughter that wants to spend time in my shop.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
