Default 782 ignition -- what causes this?

My 782 wouldn't start a couple months ago.... Narrowed it down to a connection on the back of the ignition switch. The blade with the green wire was really corroded and the female connector looked burnt. Replaced the connector, sanded the blade, and everything worked fine.

Yesterday, the same issue happened. Took the ignition out and the same story! Blade looks corroded and the connector was burnt.

Any ideas what's causing this? Maybe the ignition's just shot.

Thanks

Replace the switch and replace any/all burnt terminals.

i,m guessing you didnt replace the switch when you did the repair,i would replace the switch and buy a repair harness. solder and heat shrink all connections. check the wiring for any areas rubbed thru, and the connector pin out location

you probably have high resistance in the switch causing heat... like the others said.. replace the switch and the connector.. should solve your issue

The switch/connections is a trouble point on those.
As the switch corrodes over time, the connectors ark and get hot, more corrosion takes place and it goes down hill from there.
The switch spades are plated steel, the connectors are copper but upon close inspection they will be blue from heat, and lost their springiness and ability to stay tight insuring a good connection.
Usually the battery supply is the main culprit
To really solve it as mentioned, replace the connectors and the switch.
I'm a thrifty guy but replacement is the only sure cure.

After 35 years of service it should of lasted longer!
your problem is common on 782s and 682s. I have replaced many of them over time.

I agree, all electrical parts should be able to last a minimum of 100 years

I wish they did last 100 years, cause I'm no good with electrical!

Replacement is on its way. Sounds like the ignition itself just went bad, so I'm hoping plug-and-play fixes it fine.

Thanks

They do last for 100 years as long as you don't use them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
