Default 582 engine swap

Hey guys, I have a 582 with the original Briggs 16hp twin that is now over 3,000 hours and needs work. From what I've read these engines are difficult to rebuild and not really worth it since they are pretty much all aluminum. I've read every thread I can on 582 swaps to a Kohler but still have a few questions. I'd like to keep this as simple and cheap as possible and it seems like a Magnum 18 or 20 is the easiest but I've heard others say a command 18 is easy also. I found a deal on an 18 hp horizontal shaft command from around 2005-2006 that came out of a cub but if the Magnum is an easier swap I'd rather wait and go that way. I use this tractor for mowing so I need to be able to use the front PTO. I'd appreciate advice from anyone that has done this swap before or knows about it.

Go with the command. I put one in my 582 and have been happy with it. and if my 2072 with its original 20 mag ever gives up I will put a command or a vanguard in it. The mags were a good motor just better technology out there now. be it a command or a vanguard.
Wally.

Thanks Wally. What all did you have to change over to make the swap? I've read several different things like drive shaft, motor mounts, etc. Just trying to figure out what I'm getting into ahead of time.

here is a link to the write up I did on mine. The thing that took the most time was getting the engine spacing right I still wanted to use my front pto so I needed it to be in the same spot as the original so the belt would line up with the mule drive. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=19982

I just am finishing up putting a Magnum 20 in a 582. It is a direct replacement. The wiring is even correct as the Briggs and Magnum are both magneto ignition.
use the 3 pin driver from the Briggs
use the spacers between the engine plate and bottom of the engine (.469 spacers) (950-3009)
use engine tins from a kt or magnum

This replacement can be made to look almost factory. I have 3 Magnums, they are a great engine if you can find them!

HTH,
Mike

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
