Default Quest for more horsepower

I've finally worked all the bugs out of my new to me 2084, which by the way is an awesome machine. I read somewhere that you can change the carburetor and pick up a few HP, but I haven't found a definite answer to what needs to be changed. Any advice on how to pick up a couple ponies would be greatly appreciated.

Ive read everything from a full carb swap to changing the main jet to removing the throttle stop screw so I dunno what is fact and what isn't. Im curious to know the truth as well as Id like to make my 1864 have 22 HP.

That's pretty much what I have read. I'm not sure two horsepower would make much of a difference, but I'm willing to do what needs to be done if I knew what it involves.

I don't understand, if you want something with more horsepower, why did you buy something with less?

IIRC, if you want 1 more horsepower, then you need about 1 more cubic inch.

The power upgrade is usually referring to the CH18, CH20 & CH22. At least for the CH20 it was determined a main jet change would take it to CH22 specs.

My understanding is the CH18-22 all use the exact same parts except the carb so it has nothing to do with cubic inches.

I just looked up some parts for a 1864 and 2284 to compare them. They have:
same block
same rods
same pistons
same crankshaft
same heads

different cam
different carburetor

That's about everything that would change the horsepower. I would be interested to know what the difference is between the cams.

One or two more horsepower? Think that'll make any substantial difference?

I wouldn't bother.

Funny thing about this horsepower stuff. I've owned Cubs from the 7 hp Original to a 2084 and used them for a lot of details from cutting grass, pulling logs, cars, blowing snow, pushing snow, dirt, etc and I've never run out of power.

Unless the load you're currently applying to the tractor causes the governor to hold the throttle blade wide open, I don't see where changing anything will be of any benefit except bragging rights.

That's not to say that some other owners don't meet my criteria.

As a PS. Didn't some of those Kohlers use coils with an automatic spark advance vs the older engines that had static advance only? That should increase power somewhat.

I agree, two horsepower probably wouldn't be noticed. But I like tinkering and if this would be an easy upgrade I'm up for it. Besides it would give me an excuse to be in the garage with my Cub.
