Default Delco-Remy S/G

The S/G (model #1101691) from my 104 appears to be fried. The brushes are carbon dust and it appears that the cabling to the fields has also carbonized. I haven't yet cracked the screws holding the fields in place so I haven't gotten a good look at them.

A quick Google search produces rebuild kits for the brushes but no luck so far for the fields. I'm wondering if it isn't cheaper to just replace the unit.

Anyone experience dealing with this have advice or suggestions? I don't mind attempting a full rebuild if parts are available and it's cost effective to do so, but if it makes more sense to replace the S/G I need to move on that. The weeds down here have swallowed a couple of small dogs, and have their eyes on the small children.

In my opinion......I would take that S/G to a reputable repair shop and have it rebuilt. The original quality of the Delco-Remy S/G will be preserved.

The new stuff one sees today comes from places like China or other countries. I have read numerous times some of the sad tales of these purchases.

The decision is yours.

Default S/G

I purchased one of those Chinese S/G'S for my 108 on E-BAY. It charged till the warranty ran out. It still starts but don't charge. I did not know it was Chinese until I received it. CURT

I got one of those Chinese ones, and it died 2 months later. I rebuilt my original one and has worked for 3 years running. JUST REBUILD IT!!! It was very simple and cost was a lot lower. Have the Armature turned down by a professional, by other than that the rest is simple.

Not to hijack this thread, I have a damaged SG on my 72, the armature is cracked in a couple places so it doesn't charge, but the starter end of it works just fine. It's been this way for decades, but when I restore it I want to do it right. Is that a repair a shop can do?

All,
Advice to have the unit rebuilt is appreciated. I'll have to knock around to find a reputable repair shop. Don't speak Chinese so I don't think I'll go shopping there. Might be a good time to loosen a few other nuts and bolts and fix a few other issues while the S/G is being repaired.

I've rebuilt several myself, not a lot to them but the issue I found is getting the quality parts as stated above. There are kits in ebay from just brushes to brushes, bearings, plus start and field coils. I ran into an issue with purchasing both coils. When installed they were too thick an no matter how tight I got the field pole screws the armature wouldn't spin. I actually just had a bad field coil so I just changed it and used the old start coil and all was fine. I will say that if you have one tractor and you rely on it for everything then the rebuild shop is the way to go. I will say though that it isn't hard to troubleshoot one to see what the exact problem is though.

Thanks Alvy. I had seen a video regarding the full rebuild with new field coils and it did appear to be one of those "not so hard, but..." jobs. My google search did not turn up coils, only the brush/rebuild kits. The 104 is the only one in the barn so a rebuild will get the job done faster for me. Thanks for the comments.
