Default 682 pto

Good evening. I just got my 682 running recently, it was parked in good shape and sat for 2 years before I picked it up. It took a good carb cleaning, coil and an ignition switch to fix it's problems.

So now that it's purring I find that the PTO will not engage. I did however jump it, I was able to squeeze a wire hooked to 12V in the connector below the PTO. It engaged with key off and with the motor running as well.

I figure my problem is either the relay, the switch or a bare or broken wire somewhere.

I'm looking for some advice on where to concentrate my time.

I pulled the switch, the one two wire plug came off easy, the other I wasn't able to get off with out tools. I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

Other than safety concers, any issues with running the PTO hooked directly to 12V with a switch and in line fuse? We might see some snow here soon and that would be a quick fix to use it to clean off my drive way with the snow blower attachment.

I suggest checking the wiring and switches and fixing as necessary. We, OCC, cannot suggest that you do anything that jeopardizes safety......

I will say this.... personally, I like the OEM PTO switch and relay combo. Takes the load off, but more importantly I have kids around. I like the fact that after they have been sitting on the tractor playing around, I can't jump on a start the machine with the PTO on. I grew up farming with machines that didn't have safety switch one on them, so I know my equipment well, and am always safety conscious. But..... when I was the last known user, I assume sometimes things are as I left them. Not always the case. Your tractor, but I prefer the original switch. For the record, I'm not saying all the safety devices are in working order on my machines.....

Pretty simple to get a test light or meter and start testing.

Thanks J-Mech.

I was looking around for a switch. Cub Cadet warehouse has 2 listed for a 682. They note that was is for SN 720,000 & up and the other 719,999 and below.

Oddly enough the 720K & up is listed with an IH PN (PTO SWITCH 725-0893 925-0893 IH 107146 C1). The 719,999 & below does not have an IH part number (PTO SWITCH 725-3022 925-3022).

I find it strange that the IH PN is a higher SN when the IH was the original 682.

Any one have a thought on this?

Price difference is about 15 bucks. My local dealer has both in stock.

Thanks.

It makes a difference which one. Buy the one that corresponds to the SN of your machine. Simple as that.

The SN of my tractor is 2050600U731413

I'm not certain how to read this, but either number is greater than 719999, so I'm sure I got the right part. We'll see if it does the trick

Looking at the service manual, it states that the wiring diagram is for 719999 and below. Based on what I'm seeing, it's a bit different than my 682. Guess I'll be untaping and tracing wires.

Your serial number is 731413. You need to be looking at the diagrams for the 720000 and above.

Found the diagram...a quick search last night would have been worth it.

http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21

From what I found with the switch, when I engage the PTO the switch connects A to B (Black PTO to brown Rev SW Relay).

I however do not get 12 V out of the brown wire. If this is the reverse switch relay, found at the Neutral location on the F & R column, I see that right off this switch someone over the last 30 years put another manual switch onto this rev switch. Prior to that I believe it went through a fuse on the dash. I suspect that this has something to do with it...but i'm not exactly certain. I tried the switch in both positions. I found that in some cases the tractor wouldn't start, flick the switch and it would.

You have looking at the WRONG diagram. You need to look at the one for 720,000 & higher.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
