I drained my 2182 hydro today and I wish I dad done it the day I got it. At least when I got the tractor I replaced the filter right away. The fluid looked ok on the dipstick so I thought a fluid change could wait, boy was I wrong. Here is a pic of what came out. It doesn't look verry good to me, it has a rusty brown color to it.

That reminds me, I need to do a couple of those. The fluid always looks good on the stick but when you drain it, it looks terrible. Too cold today!!!

Good job, that's one of the first things I'm going to do with that 2182 we are picking up next week. What do you think about drilling the axle tube return holes?

I am planning on doing the 1864 I just got. The color of the hydro fluid looks like motor oil and the level is low. I sure hope it is not motor oil.

That looks like it has a slight red tint to it, is that right? (or might be the lighting. Or might be my old eyes....)

Your post has me thinking. In my back yard by my fire pit there is a few spots where I drive on a big side angle for a bit. I wonder if some of the nastyness of the oil could have been from driving on the big side angles and mixing up junk that may have been sitting in the axle tubes all these years? Or it's just because it may be the original oil from 1990? The tractor did sit outside for close to a year at least that I know of before I rescued it. If I have to take things apart I most likely will drill the axle tube drain holes.

Yes it does. The pic is spot on for color. First time I used it I was surprised.

It's a good thing to do, yes.....
I don't know that I would disassemble one just to do it. But that's your call. Why? It's not like engine oil would hurt it. ![]() Yes. Hy-Tran is red...... |

Well, my last two gallons were both pale brownish, not red. And my last fluid change was a partial bottle of red, and then I only had brown and was worried about mixing it (and concerned I had gotten some used mixed in).
I am certain the pale brown was direct from the dealer (same container). Hadnt seen that before, will now try to get a good pic for you. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
