Default Drive shaft fan

what is the best method for removing the roll pin on a drive shaft to replace the fan?

i use an arbor press to press the pin down flush with the drive shaft. then i use a roll pin punch to drive it through.

How on earth do you get an arbor press in there?

I'd support the driveshaft from below, get a brass rod and hammer, and use that to get it flush, then drive it out with a roll pin punch, as has been suggested.

hey matt,
i failed to tell you that i have the shaft out along with the motor and the cradle. do you know what type kohler has the wide oil pan or where i can get one to replace the hack job so i can sell it and what do you think its worth?

Oh...that might explain how redwaycc uses the arbor press...

Anyway, my method would be the same. Hammer and brass rod until it's flush, then use a roll pin punch. Make sure you use PB blaster liberally. Try to see which end of the pin looks like it's been beat on, and then drive it out from the other end so you don't have to try to drive the mushroomed end all the way through the hole.

I can't comment on what it's worth, as there are too many variable. Just about everything except CC used the wide base oil pan. They are not interchangeable either, if I remember correctly. Can you post a pic of what you have? That'd help...

Matt;
i dont have the ability to post pics. only form of internet is at work. the base and oil pan of this motor is so wide the po had to notch the cradle, weld in some angle, cut the oil pan and graft a smaller oil pan to the lip of the old one. never seen anything like it before. all i know is that it was too wide to fit in the cradle and i need to find an oil pan for it to resell so i can buy one that fits my cub. there is a tab on each side of the motor that looks to have mounting holes in it. to me it looks like it would be solid mounted on something, what, im not sure but i would like a picture of the correct oil pan so that maybe i can explain a little better. sorry so wordsy

Having just installed a new fan, new ISO mounts and fibre couplers I can tell you that if the snap ring on your old fan is not there you need to pick up a new one when you order the fan. I used Loctited on the shaft where the fan goes because the new fans are not tight enough on the shaft even with the snap ring. I also used two fiber couplers on each end of the shaft because my old ones were terribly twisted. If you do this you will have to redrill the roll pin hole nearest the engine. Other than that it's an easy job. Too bad it still shakes.

If that has the John Deere /Economy power king style pan I think it may be replaced with the correct cub cadet one with some machine work... Do a google for cub cadet oil pan and you should find a certain site with a faq section about how to do it... I beleive it does require drilling, tapping, and some welding.

yeah, its not the pan thats to wide, its the motor block itself that has the protruding tabs on each side.
