hey all. so i have the engine torn down and as far as i can tell, it is the first time it has been apart. so my question is this, the piston is stamped .003" on the top, is this the standard bore? the bore measures 3.125" the piston measures 3.097"
does this seem correct for standard? i have the engine manual, i cant find a clear definition of "stock" size. thanks all |

Well..... it can't be undersized, so yes that is a stock bore.

Have you measured for roundness, taper?
Take several measurements on the piston and bore.

yes i measured the bore with a dial bore gauge, found less than .001 deviation within the cylinder. perks if working in an anal-retentive mold shop is having it drilled in your head to measure everything in multiple ways lol.
thanks j-mech and calvin.

According to the KT manual, you should have .006-.008 clearance.
3.125 is the stock bore. Your piston should measure 3.117-3.119 3.1165 is the max wear spec. 3.097 seems like a mic misread, or it is extremely worn.

Or measuring the piston in the wrong spot.

gauge was set incorrectly, one piston measures 3.1175 and the other 3.118. getting close but i think we'll be okay!

I have a question: I thought .003 designation was a "service size" piston. In short, they are used on engines with slight out of round issues but no real wear. The bore would be made round(so now .003" bigger), the service piston installed, and all was well. In this case however, I would expect the bore in this case to be 3.128 or higher though - not 3.125. Am I wrong or missing something? |

Been my experience .003 meant piston was +.003 oversize.
possibly someone put it in a slightly worn bore, and the piston was not new and was less than .003 oversize from wear. Many a time I got a new set of .010 over rings and custom fit them in a worn Std size bore. We did a lot things in the early days when money was tight, or we were in a time constraint. |

Back before it cost a small fortune to do those kind of things. Now days, with tighter tolerances, and expensive parts..... not as good of a "cost savings".

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
