I rebuilt the steering box on my 1250 this past weekend and I ran into a problem with the bearing cups. I purchased new bearings from a sponsor and the bearing cups were different from the original one. When I attempted to install the new bearings I could not get the plug threaded in far enough for the cotter pin to clear the plug. If I used the old bearing cups everything worked. I compared the new bearing cups to the pictures in the steering rebuild article in the tech section and they looked identical.
My old bearing cups cleaned up nice so I used them with the new balls and retainers. What am I missing? The new bearing cups do not sit as deep in the plug as the old ones. Is there more than one type of plug? Chris |

I don't know that I agree with everything to OP said, but yes, they did change the bearing cups a few years ago and I do not like the new ones at all!
The ones I used to get were shaped exactly like the ones that came out of the gear box. they were tapered toward the middle and had something of an extrusion in the center... Just like the ones that come out of the gear. The new ones are flat on the "bottom" and do not set the same way in their respective nest. Personally I believe that over time, the new style cups will begin to conform to their resting place and cause excess up and down play in the steering shaft. I may be proven wrong, but I sincerely believe they will. I have however never had a problem getting the plug back in.

I had the same problem two years ago when I rebuilt the steering in my 100. Ended up using the old cups, because the new ones didn't fit correctly.

Well, it has been a while since I rebuilt a Ross Steering Column.
It appears, that Cub Cadet has made some changes. It would be great, if someone could expand on this "bearing cup" issue and the proper fix when encountering this situation.

Yosemite Sam is correct in his description of the bearing cups. I didn't have a camera with me when I was working on it and I am not taking it back out of the tractor unless I have too.
I am going to rebuild the box in my 782 this spring, I will take pictures then. Seems to be working fine with the old bearing cups. Chris |

I've rebuilt a few (8) steering columns over the past couple years. Some I put new bearing cups in, others I reused the old. To be honest, the old ones were all still fine. The new cups were a slightly different shape, but all seemed to fit fine and the column plug went back in without a problem.
Perhaps you got the wrong parts?

I used these in the past with no problems. Pretty cheap too, just like me.

The bearings I received from the vendor were CC part # IH-71930-C91.
When I compared the original to replacement bearing cups, the original ones sat lower in the plug than the replacements. When I rebuilt the column on my 126 I reused the old bearings as they were in really good shape. The ones in my 1250 that I just rebuilt were pitted. The bearing cups we ok shape. The box works fine with the old cups and new balls/cage. I don't see any problems with this, I'm just trying to figure out what I'm missing. Did I do something wrong, etc... Chris |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
